Thursday, 8th of April 2010
On 8th of April 2010, FOSIS Ireland Media Officer Khaulah Bhutta had been elected as the Equality Officer for Student Union of DCU(Dublin City University).Alhamdulillah and congratulation to Khaula.
(Taken from College View, DCU's students newspaper. ) College View:You’re the second person to get elected today, so how do you feel?
Khaula:I’m very overwhelmed and excited. I’m looking forward to working next year. At the moment I’m doing assignments so I’m kind of buzzing but I’m very very happy. I’d like to thank everyone who didd vote yes, and the ones who said no, I’d love to know why you said no. College View: Is this the culmination of some hard work for you? How did you feel your campaign went? Khaula:I think we did pretty well. The main onjective was to get people to know my name, that’s why we did the whole “koala bear” thing. I know a lot of people don’t know how to pronounce my name so I thought I’d associate it with something they could remember. I’d like to thank my campaign team, everyone that did support me and hopefully I will be able to live up to their expectations. My aim is to do my best and listen to people so hopefully I can do that. http://www.thecollegeview.com/ Human rights have always been a passion of Khaula’s and it has been an area she wants to specialise in after her studies. She wants to work closely with all the DCU offices and societies in order to make sure that her role and responsibilities are carried out. The equality officer is a fresh and vibrant role with a lot of potential and she feels the collaboration with different groups is key to ensuring that people’s voices are heard and adhered to. She is confident and ensures that her voice will be used expressively to make sure students’ needs are listened to. Khaula brings a new voice to this position in the union council and the union executive. Ethnically she is from Pakistan, nationally she is Irish and spiritually she is Muslim. She sees things from a different perspective which is needed in a university that is becoming more vibrant and colourful everyday with students from different backgrounds, cultures and beliefs. She thinks the key is to understand that we are different and embrace it. She has been involved in student work in the past year such as being the chair of the DCU Islamic society. She was the students affairs officer for FOSIS which is the Federation of Student Islamic Societies – a national body that represents all the Islamic societies in UK and Ireland, voicing the needs of over 90,000 students. She believes in equality, full stop. All students should feel comfortable in university and have equal opportunities regardless of their religion, sexuality, ethnicity and physical or mental health. FOSIS Raises Concern Following Islamophobic Attack on Vice-President of FOSIS
Thursday, 8th of April 2010
The Fe deration of Student Islamic Societies (FOSIS) in the UK and Eire today raised serious concerns following Islamophobic abuse suffered by Abida Malik and her husband as they travelled by train between Leicester and Nottingham. Faisal Hanjra, President of FOSIS, said today, "This incident has shocked many in the Muslim community. This was a young couple, minding their own business, travelling by train. They were both visibly identifiable as Muslims. A group of middle aged men boarded the train and subjected the couple to a barrage of verbal abuse and then went on to physically assault them, singling them out precisely because of their Muslim identity.” Abida Malik, Vice-President of FOSIS, said, “I am upset and hurt by the Islamophobic attack on both myself and my husband. I am concerned of such attacks repeating, especially with the rise of the EDL and the BNP. There is so much to be done to tackle the ignorance within our British society – and I hope that through the work we do as FOSIS we can proactively tackle such anti-Muslim prejudice.” Faisal Hanjra further added, “Political leaders must look urgently at the climate that has been created which allows for such abuse to go unchallenged. Physical attacks on Muslims because they are Muslim are on the rise - police, politicians and communities alike must start doing all they can to recognise this - and fight it. We urge all Muslims to be vigilant as they travel on public transport. We will be re-sending our Muslim student safety briefing, available on our website, to Muslim students over the next few days.” [Ends] Notes: 3.
